What will you use it for? — see what you need to fly it legally
Intended uses
Register this aircraft with the FAA

Commercial flights require registration whatever the aircraft weighs — the 250 g exemption is for recreational flying only. $5, valid three years, at faadronezone.faa.gov.

Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate

Any flight for compensation or hire needs one — including a single paid photograph. Knowledge test at an FAA testing centre, 16+, no flying test.

Remote ID

Any registered aircraft must broadcast Remote ID. Most recent drones do it built in; older ones need a broadcast module fitted.

Part 137 agricultural aircraft operator certificate

Dispensing any substance over a crop needs Part 137 on top of Part 107. Spray drones over 55 lb also need a Section 44807 exemption. This is the longest lead time on this page — expect months, not days.

Anti-collision lighting

Night flying is allowed without a waiver, but the aircraft needs anti-collision lights visible for three statute miles, and the Part 107 test covers night operations.

Category 1 — likely allowed over people

Under 250 g with no exposed rotating parts that could lacerate, this is the one category that needs no separate declaration. At 249 g this aircraft is a candidate; the manufacturer has to state it.

Beyond visual line of sight needs a waiver

Part 107 requires you to keep the aircraft in sight. Flying beyond that needs a 107.31 waiver, applied for per operation and not routinely granted.

Controlled airspace needs authorisation

Near an airport you need LAANC authorisation before you fly — usually instant, through an approved app. Uncontrolled airspace, 400 ft and below, needs none.

Rules summarised from FAA Part 107 and recreational flyer guidance. For the full path including state and local layers, use the requirements tool.
