Drones on the Farm: A Practical Program for Scouting, Mapping and Spraying
The farm drone conversation is stuck between two bad stories: the $30,000 turnkey pitch from a dealer, and the $99 toy that couldn’t survive a windy Tuesday. The truth in the middle is more useful. A few hundred dollars of used camera drone replaces hours of walking beans; a mid-priced mapping setup turns those flights into data you can act on; and spray drones — the expensive tier — only make sense past an acreage line you can actually calculate. This program walks the three tiers in order, with the used-market prices that change the math, and is honest about when hiring the work beats owning the machine.
What drones actually do on a farm
Strip the buzzwords and it’s four jobs, in rising order of cost:
- Scouting — eyes on crops, tile blowouts, fence lines, and livestock without burning an afternoon. Any decent camera drone does this.
- Mapping — stitched aerial surveys that show emergence gaps, drowned spots, and variability you can’t see from the cab. A camera drone plus software.
- Counting & checking — stand counts, bale counts, roof and bin inspections after weather. Same aircraft, different flight.
- Spraying & spreading — the Agras-class heavy iron applying product on target acres. Real money, real rules, real returns past a threshold.
The mistake is entering at tier four. Every operation we know that uses drones well started with a $400 scout and let the results justify each step up.
Scouting: the $500 force multiplier
A used Air-class or new Mini-class drone — $250–$600 on our shelf most weeks — pays for itself the first season in saved windshield time alone. Twenty minutes after morning coffee covers what two hours of walking used to.
What to look for in a scout: real wind resistance (farms are windy; level-5 handling or better), 30+ minute batteries (fields are big), and a zoom or high-res sensor so you can inspect a problem spot without descending into it. Skip the multispectral upsell at this tier — a plain camera and your own agronomy eye catch stress earlier than most people expect: color shifts, uneven canopy, standing water tracks.
The habit that makes it work: fly the same route weekly. Change over time, not any single image, is where scouting earns its money.

Mapping: from photos to field data
Mapping is the same aircraft flying a grid, plus software that stitches hundreds of overlapping photos into one measurable image. The software is the actual decision:

Commercial platforms (DroneDeploy, Pix4Dfields and peers) automate flight planning, processing, and prescription export to your equipment. Worth it when maps become routine, not before.
Aircraft-wise, any GPS camera drone maps small fields; serious acreage wants longer endurance, and section-scale work is where used fixed-wing (eBee class) and RTK-equipped Matrice or Mavic-Enterprise gear earns its keep — on the used market these run a third of fleet price. Multispectral (crop-health imaging beyond visible light) belongs at this tier, bought used, once you’ve proven you act on plain maps.
Spraying: own it or hire it
Spray drones (DJI Agras line, XAG) are astonishing tools: 10-plus gallon tanks, terrain-following radar, swath control — and they come with real numbers on both sides of the ledger.
Owning means the aircraft ($10k–$30k new; flight-tested used units routinely 40–60% less — this is the tier where buying used changes the whole business case), plus batteries and a generator for all-day cycling, a trailer, chemicals handling, and the certifications in section 06. It starts making sense when you have the acres to keep it busy — yours, or your neighbors’ as a side business.
Hiring means custom application at a per-acre rate with none of the capital or paperwork. The math per acre
Rough anchors to run your own numbers against:
- Scouting: a $500 used drone over three seasons on 500 acres is pennies per acre-visit. It’s not a calculation, it’s a rounding error that saves hours weekly.
- Mapping: free software + the scout drone = $0 marginal. Commercial stacks run hundreds to low thousands per year — justified when prescriptions they generate save one input pass.
- Custom spray application typically runs in the low-to-mid teens per acre depending on product and terrain — competitive with ground rigs on wet fields, steep ground, and spot work, which is exactly where drones shine.
- Owning a spray drone: against a used-market purchase price, operations covering roughly 500+ treated acres a year start closing the gap on custom rates; below that, hiring usually wins. Batteries are the hidden line — they’re consumables at this duty cycle.
Buy the scout with pocket money, earn the mapping stack with results, and make the spray drone prove itself on paper before it lands on your trailer.
The rules for ag work
Farm flying is business flying, so the recreational shortcuts don’t apply. The stack, in order:
- Part 107 certificate for whoever flies — scouting your own crops included, because it’s furthering a business. One written test; our Part 107 program is the study plan.
- Aircraft registration — every business aircraft individually, $5 each at FAA DroneZone, Remote ID included on anything current.
- Spraying adds Part 137 — an agricultural aircraft operator certificate for dispensing anything (yes, including seed). Also: most spray drones weigh over 55 lbs loaded, which requires an additional FAA exemption — established process, real paperwork, weeks not days.
- Chemicals bring the state in — commercial pesticide applicator licensing is state-level and applies to drone application like any other method.
None of this is a wall — thousands of farm operators hold the full stack. But it’s the strongest argument for the crawl-walk-run order this program teaches: the scout tier needs one test; the spray tier needs a filing cabinet. (Or a phone call to people who already have one.)
